Factors influencing international and U.S. dentists’ interest in advanced periodontal education: a pilot study

Abstract Background The enrollment of international periodontal students in U.S. dental schools has been increasing recent years. Interest applying to a periodontics specialty program may differ between U.S and school graduates. purpose this study is assess, from the perspective residents, (1) factors that interest apply programs (2) differences background Methods A 20-question survey was sent out electronically residents. questions were designed obtain information on participants’ backgrounds, influenced them specialize periodontics, their preferred features graduate programs. data analyzed using descriptive statistics for socio-demographic variables, Wilcoxon two sample test compare mean Likert scale scores, Fisher’s exact associations comparison groups. Results Of hundred residents invited participate, 28% responded. majority respondents stated implantology, previous exposure procedures, improving surgery skills, good relationship with faculty, residency curriculum, advanced faculty reputation as influencing selecting specialization. graduates have up $50,000 dollars student debt; by comparison, half domestic debt over $250,000 ( p ≤ 0.05).
